The current strategy, the National Action Plan for Social Inclusion (NAPinclusion), identifies a wide range of targeted actions and interventions to achieve the overall objective of reducing consistent poverty. A key element of NAPinclusion is the National Social Target for Poverty Reduction, which sets out the Government’s ambition for reducing and ultimately eliminating poverty.
Update of NAPinclusion
NAPinclusion was recently updated for the period 2015 – 2017 to reinforce Government actions to meet the interim poverty target of 4 per cent by 2016. The updated Plan has 14 high level goals that better reflect the current issues and interventions to tackle poverty and social exclusion.The Updated National Action Plan reflects Ireland’s active inclusion strategy for achieving the National Social Target for Poverty Reduction. It is based on the ‘developmental welfare state’ which adopts a life-cycle approach to placing the individual at the centre of policy development and delivery. It has three main policy components:
- Adequate minimum income
- Inclusive labour markets
- Access to quality services.
Social inclusion reports
Implementation of NAPinclusion has been actively monitored over its duration via the annual Social Inclusion Report. This is one of the formal monitoring and reporting mechanisms set out in NAPinclusion. Preparation and compilation of the report is coordinated by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, with input from relevant Government Departments.
